Essential Pre-Production Checklist for Successful Videos

Every disappointing video shares one ancestor: a shoot that started without a plan. Pre-production is unglamorous, invisible in the final cut, and decides 80% of the outcome. Here’s the checklist we run before a crew touches a camera.

1. One sentence of purpose

“This video makes ___ feel ___ so they ___.” If the blank is “everyone / impressed / call us,” stop — that’s three videos pretending to be one. A listing tour, a brand story and a Reel have different jobs; pick this video’s job. (Length and platform follow from this.)

2. The shot list

Every scene written down with its location and framing: the hook shot, the proof shots, the closing image. The list is also a negotiation tool — when time runs short on site, you cut from the bottom, never from the essentials.

3. Location and light recon

Which way do the windows face, and when? Where does the sun set relative to the exterior? What needs decluttering or staging? For homes we send sellers a prep checklist; for businesses, a 15-minute walkthrough call covers it.

4. People and logistics

  • Who appears on camera, what they wear (solid colours, no fine stripes), talking points agreed.
  • Access, parking, elevators booked for gear, pets and customers managed.
  • Weather contingency and a rain date in writing.

5. Music and reference

Two or three reference videos agreed in advance kill most revision rounds before they’re born — taste disagreements are cheap before the edit and expensive after. Music direction set early shapes the pacing on set. (Licensing rules here.)

This entire stage is included in every Melon Media booking — it’s why our 48–72h delivery doesn’t sacrifice quality. Book a project and we’ll start with the plan.

Frequently asked questions

How long does pre-production take?

For most small-business projects, one focused call plus a day of planning on our side. Skipping it doesn’t save that day — it moves it into reshoots.

Who writes the shot list — client or crew?

The crew drafts it from your goals; you approve it. You know the business, we know what cameras need — the list is where both meet.

What’s the most commonly forgotten item?

Access logistics: parking, elevators, alarm codes, a contact with keys. More shoot delays start in the lobby than behind the camera.
